The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us all the value, not just of leadership, but of health care. Too many people have learned the hard way that care tied only to a job can disappear when you need it the most; when you lose that job. With the expertise of years working in and studying the health insurance industry, I can help our state navigate the federal healthcare landscape and ensure we have the programs and coverage Minnesota needs. We can be proud of our Eagan schools and the excellent education that our children receive. Unfortunately, not all communities across Minnesota have the financial resources to provide their students with the education they deserve. Students from Ely to Eagan to Elgin should have opportunities to reach their full potential and be prepared for the world of work. I am committed to both ensuring equitable funding of K-12 education throughout the state and to make a post-secondary education possible for all students. And in this age of COVID-19, lawmakers must be willing to provide our schools the resources they need to be safe environments for our students, families, and educators. READ MORE
Minnesotans work hard and deserve fair pay and living wages. We must provide equitable income while championing Minnesota’s incredible small business community, so people and industry can prosper together. For us all to succeed, we must urgently address longstanding injustice in our economy. From structural racism in small business finance to racial hiring prejudice to gender-based pay disparities; we all deserve to be paid based on our merits. Back to list of issues.
Safe and affordable housing is the foundation for a stable and successful families and communities and life that every Minnesotan deserves; for too many affordable housing remains out of reach. I will work to ensure equal access to housing, increase availability of credit to disenfranchised communities, and tenant protections for renters. Back to list of issues.
The climate crisis is real and clean energy is our future. With nearly 50% of our power coming from renewable sources last year, Minnesota is emerging as a national clean-energy leader. I will be a champion for new clean energy incentives that will lead to sustainable green, good-paying careers for Minnesotans. READ MORE
Minnesota is a state of opportunities, whether in jobs, schools, nature or the arts, and it is transportation that connects us. I love our light rail and bus system and will work to expand it so it is effective and efficient for riders. I will also support efforts to wean our transportation system off fossil fuels. Back to list of issues.
There are substantial inequalities in our criminal justice system, with communities of color disproportionately targeted by police and over-represented in our prisons and jails. We all want to share a safe and vibrant community, and I will work to bring people and organizations from all our neighborhoods together and achieve real systemic reform. Back to list of issues.
Many of Minnesota’s roads and bridges are aging and reaching the end of their expected life spans. As we learned with the 35W bridge collapse in 2007, this can lead to devastating consequences. I am committed to ensuring Minnesota’s infrastructure is modernized to meet the needs of a 21st century climate-friendly economy. This includes renewable electrification of fleets and development of bi-directional charging infrastructure, as well as bicycle and pedestrian trail systems.
When it comes to the internet, our state has two digital divides: one demographic and the other geographic. Equality on this issue means 100% connectivity state-wide, but there are clear racial and economic disparities.
Minnesota has made progress on expanding broadband, but we must finish the work of connecting everyone, immediately, so that our children and workforce are not left behind. READ MORE
My views on gun violence are based on what will best protect vulnerable people and their families. Along with most Americans, I am heartsick each time there is another mass shooting in America. Although mass shootings receive the headlines, particularly when these acts of violence take place in a school, we cannot ignore the number of people killed each year in individual shootings. I believe we must do everything we can within the bounds of the Second Amendment to keep guns out of public places, get military style weapons out of our communities and off our streets, and ensure that guns are not available to violent or mentally ill people even in private spaces. I am proud to be a Protect Minnesota Orange Star Candidate. Back to list of issues.
All my life I have worked for equality and justice. As a legislator, I will fight for judicial and economic equality. I believe in the rights of everyone to safe, stable and affordable housing, something that LGBTQ youth lack disproportionately in many communities. I am thrilled that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Title VII applies to sexual orientation and the afforded freedom from job discrimination. I know that is a starting point and more work is needed to make that decision a reality. I will work to ensure that our laws ensure these rights in both public and private settings. I also believe the Legislature must pass a statewide conversion therapy ban and will work toward that end. Finally, I understand that LGBTQ people, and youth in particular, often need support and counseling, and will work to make sure that it is available to all who need it as part of her health care platform.
