Every single person is entitled to the health care they need when they need it. Race, income, employment, or legal status should not determine if someone receives the health care they need. As we all know, our current outdated system does not provide the care people deserve. Employees may feel stuck working for health insurance instead of for what fulfills their lives. With the number of people in Minnesota without health insurance at its lowest rate ever measured, work remains to be done especially to reduce the gap in coverage based on different racial groups. Not all communities across Minnesota have the financial resources to provide their students with the quality education and opportunities they deserve. Plus, even in well-off districts, not all kids are equally well served. COVID-19 shined a spotlight on the disparities students across Minnesota face. Rather than ensuring equity and excellence for all students, we have created haves and have nots. As your state representative, I support legislation to make strategic investments that give all children an equitable start in life through free pre-K programming. READ MORE
Minnesotans work hard and deserve fair pay and living wages. I support legislation that aims to provide equitable income while championing Minnesota’s incredible small business community, so people and industry can prosper together. For us all to succeed, we must urgently address longstanding injustice in our economy. From structural racism in small business finance to racial hiring prejudice to gender-based pay disparities; we all deserve to be paid based on our merits. Back to list of issues.
Safe and affordable housing is the foundation for stable and successful families and communities and life that every Minnesotan deserves; for too many, affordable housing remains out of reach. I am working to ensure equal access to housing, increase availability of credit to disenfranchised communities, and tenant protections for renters. Back to list of issues.
The climate crisis is arguably the biggest threat we face as a species. With nearly 50% of our power coming from renewable sources last year, Minnesota is emerging as a national clean-energy leader, but we cannot stop there. Every day we hear of more natural disasters fueled by climate change. We must act swiftly to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis on Minnesotans and keep global temperature from rising above 1.5 degrees celsius. We must deliver sustainable economic growth by investing in clean technology and business models that protect the environment, fight climate change, and keep our people working in good jobs. I support working to expand and improve our public transportation options so they are effective and efficient for riders. I also support efforts to wean our transportation system off fossil fuels. Back to list of issues.
There are substantial inequalities in our criminal justice system, with communities of color disproportionately targeted by police and over-represented in our prisons and jails. I support a holistic approach to public safety that invests in our communities by providing support and resources, and ensures police spending is strategic and effective at reducing crime. I am working to ensure all Minnesotans regardless of race or zip code can feel safe in their neighborhoods. Back to list of issues.
Many of Minnesota’s roads and bridges are aging and reaching the end of their expected life spans. As we learned with the 35W bridge collapse in 2007, this can lead to devastating consequences. I am committed to ensuring Minnesota’s infrastructure is modernized to meet the needs of a 21st century climate-friendly economy. This includes renewable electrification of fleets and development of bi-directional charging infrastructure, as well as bicycle and pedestrian trail systems. Back to list of issues.
Over 150,000 Minnesota households lack basic broadband internet access, and many more have only minimal coverage options, and this disparity disproportionately affects people of color, low income folks, and rural Minnesota. I support legislation that will provide access to reliable internet for all Minnesotans. READ MORE
Along with most Americans, I am heartsick each time there is another mass shooting in America. Although mass shootings receive the headlines, particularly when these acts of violence take place in a school, we cannot ignore the number of people killed each year in individual shootings. I believe we must do everything we can within the bounds of the Second Amendment to keep guns out of public places, get military style weapons out of our communities and off our streets, ensure all firearms are stored safely, and ensure that guns are not available to violent or mentally ill people even in private spaces. As a bi-sexual legislator, I am committed to using my voice and platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. I believe in the rights of everyone to safe, stable and affordable housing, something that LGBTQ youth lack disproportionately in many communities. I am thrilled that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Title VII applies to sexual orientation and the afforded freedom from job discrimination. I know that is a starting point and more work is needed to make that decision a reality. I will work to ensure that our laws ensure these rights in both public and private settings. I also support the statewide conversion therapy ban proposed in the legislature, and will work toward that end. Finally, I understand that LGBTQ people, and youth in particular, often need support and counseling, and will work to make sure that it is available to all who need it as part of their health care platform. Throughout my entire life, I have believed in and advocated for the right to choose. Roe v. Wade has been the law of the land my whole adult life, and I refuse to revert to a world where abortions are not safe and readily available for anyone who needs them. Years of hard work went into ensuring abortion is secured in the Minnesota constitution. Yet, every session we see legislators attempting to pass laws that chip away at these fundamental rights. We must keep working to protect the right to bodily autonomy for all Minnesotans. I know a majority of us support the right to choose. As a member of the Reproductive Freedom Caucus I have, and will continue to, support legislation that protects Minnesotan’s right to make their own choices about their bodies. I am so proud of Minnesota for codifying access to abortion into law, and am excited about proposed legislation to increase access to reproductive healthcare in our state. Back to list of issues.
